Essential Lip Products You Need in Your Life

There’s nothing worse than getting ready for a night out, going to put on your favourite bold lipstick and then realising that your lips are looking absolutely grim. We’ve all been there – dry skin, flaky lips and a complete lack of moisture.

Over the years, I’ve added a few products to my routine which help to make sure I’m always lipstick-ready. From moisturising balms to exfoliating scrubs, here are a few of my favourite essential lip products.

Super Hydrating Lip Balm

Top of my list of essential lip products is an intense, deeply moisturising lip balm as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips. At the moment I’m loving Nuxe Reve de Miel which is a bit of a cult favourite amongst bloggers. I find this really nourishing, so always apply it right before I go to bed to make sure my lips are nice and hydrated when I wake up in the morning.

If my lips are particularly chapped, I’ll dig out the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I’m a bit of a latecomer to the wonders of Eight Hour Cream, but tried it recently when my lips were going through a particularly dry spell thanks to a cold sore. It worked wonders and my lips were back to normal in just a couple of days. If you suffer from dry lips, you need to give Eight Hour Cream a go!

Daily Lip Balm

As well as more intense lip balms to use as treatments, I always like to have a lip balm in my handbag for daily use. I like to use something that’s light but still hydrating (and preferably something with a nice scent!), so the Lucky Cloud Lip Butters are perfect for this. I think I have one of each scent now as they’re the ideal dinky size for shoving in your bag or pocket for daily use.

I love the Chocolate Lip Butter and the new Blooming Marvellous Lip Butter (with notes of vanilla, rose, lemon and strawberry) which has been produced in collaboration with eteaket to match their Blooming Marvellous Green Tea. All of Lucky Cloud’s products are vegan, and the lip butters are packed full of coconut and cocoa butters, sweet almond, thistle and vitamin E oil to help protect your lips.

Exfoliating Lip Scrub

Another one of my essential lip products is a good exfoliating lip scrub, and I think Lush do the best ones around. They last for ages, are pretty cheap, and they smell gooooood. I’m using the Bubblegum Lip Scrub at the moment and it smells and tastes super sweet. I use it around once a week (or whenever I’m about to apply a particularly bold lipstick) to get rid of any dry patches and make my lips feel nice and smooth.

Lip Colours

Once your lips are suitably exfoliated, hydrated and moisturised, you’ll need a few lipsticks to add to your essential lip products kit. Everyone likes different things when it comes to lipsticks, so it takes a little bit of trial and error to find the formulas, finishes and colours that you like. Personally, I like a tinted balm for daytime, a creamy lipstick for evenings and a matte cream for bolder colours.

My favourite everyday lip colour is the No7 High Shine Lip Crayon in Tropical Beach. It’s a gorgeous peachy-coral colour which you can build up depending how bright you want the finished look to be. On days when I want to wear lipstick, I usually stick with the coral theme and opt for MAC Crosswires which is a beautiful pinky-coral shade in a cremesheen finish. For a bright red lip, you can’t go wrong with the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet matte lip colours – I love the shade Personne ne Rouge.

Nice article 🙂 For me it’s Lanolips 101 for general moisturising (particularly at night) but I have lip balms in every bag, I keep trying new ones.
I’ve got the Boot lip crayon, but my preferred shade is tickle – it’s a more orangy-coral. I’ve also got Berry which is nice for that deep plum. As you say, very build-able colour, great for work into the evening, and I’ve even used them as blush on holiday to save taking too many products.
My main red is still Soap and Glory Mantrap, but on the hunt for something new soon!

I think I’ll have to try out a few more shades of the No7 lip crayon. Despite it being my favourite everyday product, I haven’t tried any of the shades yet apart from Tropical Beach!

I think MAC Russian Red is my favourite red lipstick, but it’s so hard to choose – I have so many and they’re all sliiiightly different!

I love a bold, matte lip as well! As I’ve gotten older, I find that I completely avoid glosses on the lips. The Nuxe lip balm is a product I didn’t quite get on with despite it’s cult status. To me, it felt thick and sort of grainy. It seemed to sit on my lips more than moisturizing. The Bourjois Velvets are something I’ve been eying on Asos for ages!

    • Gillian says:

I find the Nuxe balm quite thick and heavy too – I think that’s why I prefer using it overnight rather than a daily product. It feels almost like a lip mask or treatment rather than an everyday lip balm!
I can’t recommend the Bourjouis Velvets enough! I’ve got quite a few shades and they’re all lovely, really pigmented, long-lasting and not drying at all.

A matte lip is my favourite, the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvets are great. I have so many of them!
