Makeup Storage

I’d been meaning to sort out my makeup storage for the past two years or so, but never quite got round to it. My makeup was scattered between various makeup bags or just piled in messy heaps beside my mirror, making it rather difficult to actually use my desk as a desk. It also made it difficult to find what I wanted when I was in a hurry, which meant things quickly got forgotten about if they weren’t part of my daily makeup routine. Since sorting out my storage a couple of weeks ago I have made full use of my lipsticks and blushers, and am now much more likely to reach for different colours when doing my makeup in the morning. I still have a pile of old Glossy Boxes sitting on the floor full of makeup, however, so I’m not completely organised yet!

I was originally intending to buy some of the Muji acrylic storage drawers but the ones I wanted were out of stock so I went on the hunt for something else. I settled on these drawers from Amazon which are a similar size to the narrow Muji drawers, but with 3 drawers instead of 2. These are the perfect size for small items like lipsticks, eyeliners, eyeshadows etc. but aren’t so great for larger things like bottles of foundation. I think I will keep an eye on the Muji website for the other drawers coming back in stock, would be handy to have even more drawer space!

I read on someone’s blog (or maybe Twitter?) recently that they had bought these plant pots from Ikea to use as desk/makeup storage. I forgot to bookmark the post though and can’t for the life of me remember who it was, so if it was you please let me know and I will add in a link to your post! Anyway, when I was in Ikea the other day I spotted the pots and decided to get some for myself. I got two – one for makeup and one for other toiletries – and they are great for keeping larger things in, like makeup remover, foundation, moisturiser, dry shampoo, hairspray etc. There is also a slightly smaller version but I couldn’t find it anywhere in the shop, it would have been perfect for keeping my makeup brushes in! Currently they’re just in a mug but I would like to have something a bit more grown up haha! Have you seen any good DIYs for makeup brush holders?

My daily makeup which I use every day stays in a makeup bag on my desk at the moment. The bag is a really old one from Superdrug (I think) and it does the job fine, but I’d like a new one that looks a bit nicer with the rest of my stuff. I’d rather keep my daily makeup in a bag than in another drawer as I think it’s much easier for grabbing quickly if I need to get ready at a friends house or if I’m going away for the weekend. I don’t really have to think about packing a makeup bag as all my usual stuff is already there – just chuck in a lipstick or two and I’m ready to go!

How do you store your makeup?

  • I store my makeup with Muji drawers too they are amazing and it's easy to keep everything organized with them and a big plus it's that they are really easy to clean too! I love how you store your makeup Gillian and the mug where you keep your brushes is adorable, I have a similar one with my pens on my desk ahaha xx

Love the little pots! I am using sundae glasses for my brushes and everyday make up at the moment but the rest in shoved in a massive hat box/vanity case

Beautiful storage, love the pots! I really need to organise my collection, everything's just in random bags, shelves etc in my room! xx

  • Really enjoyed this post! I use my old Glossyboxes as storage. I use the boxes as dividers in my drawers to separate everything.

  • All of my makeup and skincare currently lives in boxes on my floor 🙁 I am waiting for a new dressing table to be delivered then they can all have a little home! 🙂 Luckally I have just had confirmation that the dressing table is coming on Thursday! Yay! I can't wait to get everything organised:)

    Love, Rachel

  • It all looks very neat, I like 🙂 I've got some of those Ikea plant pots, I never would have thought to use them for storage though, nice idea! xo

I LOVE your storage, it looks so tidy and put together! I'm definitely considering purchasing these drawers, they look identical to the muji ones and way cheaper! Great post!

Love this storage! My make up storage is shameful, but I don't have a dressing table just a stubby shelf where it all needs to be stacked, the joys of sharing a room with a boy! 🙁 wahhh x

My make-up – which I admit I don't have a lot because of culling it all with moving and never rebuying things are all just shoved into the bathroom cabinet and my brushes and mascaras are in an old tin I decorated with some fancy paper – it looks better then it sounds!

  • Love this, i'm a sucker for storage boxes, drawers & pots! (and don't get me started on my Really Useful Box obsession!)

My makeup is shoved in to a big traincase. My entire bedroom needs a proper overhaul.

Love it, those plant pots are such a great idea! Mine is currently just chucked into drawers as I don't have the space for a desk in my room! Desperate for my own house with a beautiful big vanity area! xo

  • Such a great way to store all your makeup – much better than rammed in a drawer where I can never find anything! Plant pots are really cute!

  • I love a good organized area and my makeup collection always has a tendency to grow without my even noticing it. I wish I had my makeup better organized but for now I just have it strew in a bin together which is honestly a step forward since I use to just throw it on my desk in piles haha. I love the Ikea planter and the clear boxes are really cute.

I store my make up with Muji boxes too – They're forever coming in and out of stock but you should only have to wait a couple of weeks, tops! (Have a little looksie at mine here Those Amazon ones look just like the smaller Muji ones though, I want more now!!

I like the storage set up here. I actually just have a big plastic bin with three drawers that I use to store my makeup. I don't have an actual dresser so that makes do, but everything just gets chucked in. The system you've got worked out looks so neat and pretty!

  • Yay I love makeup storage/collection posts, one of my favs! I was very tempted to get some of the muji drawers but I'm a makeup artist so there's no point always unpacking my kit and putting it away, far too much to bother with.

  • Gem says:

My make up is in all the free boxes I get at Christmas or gift time offers but it's hard to see what is in them without tipping everything out. Will invest in some of the drawers when I get payed.
You have a very organised collection x

  • Caroline says:

lovely set up. mine is very similar but my desk is a lot smaller so it looks really cluttered! i really want some of those ikea pots, they look so pretty! xx
